Our Doom and Pride is the companion book to Guard at the Gates of Hell. It is a second perspective on the fall of the Empire of Ten Thousand Suns from the viewpoint of a Gladius family. A Gladius is the ultimate soldier, genetically developed by the Empire of Ten Thousand Suns to defend and maintain it. Now that the Empire is failing, Gladii must destroy the empire that bred them in order to save humanity.
Khev and Shyranne Garua are the leaders of the X Legion Valeria, a Gladius legion that survives an Imperial attempt at its destruction. The Tenth and its Fleet Support Group must defeat an Imperial smash and grab on Tactine, the most developed world in what becomes the Cluster. Then Khev and Shyranne must conduct a campaign to destroy, not defeat, the Empire. They must fight Armageddon.
Their son, Liam, is a young trooper left with memories he doesn't want from the Tactine battle, memories that haunt him and lead him into a different path. Liam becomes a Scout, a sniper, an assassin, and then an explorer. During exploration training, he falls in love with Joey, a Tactinese girl. Joey becomes Liam's anchor.
As an explorer, Liam finds a lost human colony and fights a threat hundreds of years old. As a Scout during the huge battle to topple the Empire, Liam helps destroy the worst threat the Corps of Gladius has ever faced and, in the process, saves a family and himself as well.
This story includes massive armies, huge space battles, and submarine analogs that are themselves key combatants in the fall of the Empire. But, in the end, the story isn't about grand events and forces, it's about people who fight to save humanity. Our Doom and Pride is a story of duty, obligation, love, and redemption.

A well developed plot with the character development I was expecting. You may find it hard to put down once you start reading. The series flows bcc well and the characters are not two dimensional.
I think this is an excellent read, and a great continuation of the story about the Corps of Gladius. The author said there is more to come in his afterward, all he had to do is write it. Okay then, get to writing it!
The Corp izz quiescent Until called upon to defend. Stoic lads and wumin. Theyz label aggressors azz Predators against the helpless. Muchly Ouchly comes to those fwreely because Itzz da rite thing to do. Wezz awaiting the Gladius story palette to be colored in wid More. Izzdatso grasshopper !
Overall well written and edited. Stayed true to the first book while expanding the introduced universe. In my opinion reading this book first will have more impact. Personal pet peeve...the political machinations and space battles are over the top, still the history and creation of the Legion makes this a five star read.

Really enjoyed this book. Perhaps not quite as much as I did the first book, but still definitely a great read. Was nice to see what was going on in the cluster at large around the same time as the Victrix was doing their thing on Cauldwell and Shana was getting ever more awesome. Really looking forward to book 3!
First I cant wait for book #3. I enjoyed the first book in the series better than this one. I did like book two and know that Mr. Olney loves to give a quality product. The action overpowered the story a little on this one but I think as a book to bring all the separate story lines together and to give the foundation of the story it worked. I completely recommend the series as well as the author to anyone interested in action packed stores that catch the imagination.
